December 8, 2024 - Washington, D.C. — In light of recent developments in Syria, the Shia Muslim Foundation (SMF) urges all parties to commit to a peaceful transition of power to ensure stability, security, and the protection of the Syrian people. The fall of the Assad government marks a pivotal moment, but the preservation of peace, dignity, and religious sanctity must be at the forefront of this transition.
Of particular importance is the protection of Syria’s sacred shrines, including the revered Sayeda Zeinab Shrine and Sayeda Ruqqaya Shrine in Damascus. These sites hold profound significance for millions of Shia Muslims worldwide. They are not merely historical landmarks, but symbols of faith, resilience, and unity.
The Sayeda Zeinab Shrine, located in the southern suburbs of Damascus, is the resting place of Sayeda Zeinab, the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the daughter of Imam Ali (AS) and Lady Fatima (SA). Known for her courage and unwavering faith, Sayeda Zeinab’s legacy represents the struggle for justice and the defense of truth.
Similarly, the Sayeda Ruqqaya Shrine, dedicated to the daughter of Imam Hussain (AS), stands as a symbol of the enduring spirit of Ahlul Bayt (the family of the Prophet). These shrines have historically been sites of solace and reflection for Muslims, and their sanctity must remain untouched during this critical period.
SMF calls on all governing authorities, rebel groups, and international stakeholders to:
Ensure the Protection of Religious Sites: The sacred shrines must be safeguarded against any harm, desecration, or exploitation. This particularly includes the shrines of Sayeda Zainab and Sayeda Ruqayya, but also includes all historical sites of importance in Syria.
Commit to Non-Violence: All parties must prioritize peaceful dialogue over armed conflict to prevent further suffering.
Preserve Religious Freedoms: Uphold the right of all communities to practice their faith without fear or persecution.
The destruction or desecration of these holy sites would deepen divisions and hinder prospects for lasting peace. Respecting their sanctity is not only a religious obligation but a moral imperative for all who seek justice and reconciliation in Syria.
SMF stands in solidarity with the people of Syria and remains committed to advocating for peace, justice, and the protection of religious heritage.
